Julia Kotulska, Founder & CEO, Synergize, found that when studying in Paris many students shared that despite having solid business ideas, they often hesitate to pursue them due to the fear of doing it alone. Enter Synergize, a networking app that uses a matchmaking algorithm to connect students with business ideas (visionaries) with those who have the skills to join them (integrators). Her vision is to foster business synergies and build confidence, to empower students to bring their ideas to fruition. This week the RIoT team caught up with Julia to learn more about her startup journey.

Q1: Could you tell us a little bit about your company?

Synergize is a networking application that, based on a ‘matchmaking algorithm,’ connects students with a concrete business idea (the visionaries) with students who have the skillset and desire to join an already existing idea showing high levels of compatibility (the integrators). The compatibility level of the business partners will be assessed on the basis of factors such as personality, skillset required, industry of preference, level of desired engagement, communication style, work habits, professional goals, geographic location, availability, values, and past project experiences. Synergize will leverage the shared experiences and trust inherent in educational institutions to connect like-minded individuals and create a safe, encouraging space for young entrepreneurs to reach their goals. In essence, this project aims to revolutionize how entrepreneurs connect and collaborate, providing a tailored, strategic approach to forming business partnerships in the digital age.

Q2: What inspired you to start your own company?

The idea stemmed from observing and talking with students in Paris, when working at the Skema Ventures Club in France. When I asked students what stops them from putting their solid idea into place most of the time they explained that they are afraid of doing it alone. My goal is to create a safe space for the creative minds in academia, through connecting undergraduate, graduate as well as alumni students- helping them create business synergies, giving them the confidence to go through with their creativity.

Q3: What previous experiences influence your role today?

My passion for creating change and empowering communities has been a driving force behind my journey to founding Synergize. My education in International Marketing and Business Development at SKEMA Business School, coupled with my Bachelor’s degree in International Business Administration from the Rotterdam School of Management, laid a strong foundation for my entrepreneurial path.

In leadership roles, such as Marketing Manager at the Skema Ventures Club and Chief of Events at the Women’s Business Network, I learned how to drive initiatives and manage teams effectively. Consulting for the African NGO Rhiza Babuyile and participating in Model United Nations Conferences honed my strategic planning and public speaking skills, highlighting the importance of impacting the community around me. These diverse experiences have shaped my ability to connect like-minded individuals and create a supportive environment for young entrepreneurs, which is at the core of Synergize.

Q4: What are the biggest challenges you’ve encountered as a startup founder this far, and how did you overcome them?

As a young startup founder from Poland, one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is establishing credibility. In Eastern European countries the power distance varies greatly compared to the US. This can lead to a hierarchical approach in business interactions, where authority and credibility are often linked to age and experience. Building credibility required consistent effort in demonstrating reliability and value. By being proactive in community involvement and offering support to others, I gradually built trust and demonstrated my commitment to the entrepreneurial ecosystem. You cannot get discouraged by these challenges; instead, use them as a driving force to push forward and prove your capabilities.

Q5: Do you have any mentors or role models who have inspired you while you have been building your business?

Yes, both of my parents have been significant mentors and role models throughout my entrepreneurial journey. My mother, as the founder and headmaster of an international school in Poland, has demonstrated the importance of visionary leadership and dedication to education. Her ability to create and manage an institution that bridges cultural and educational gaps has deeply inspired my approach to building a business that connects and supports individuals.

My father, the founder and chief executive director of an acrobatic simulator manufacturing company, has shown me the value of innovation and resilience in the face of challenges. His entrepreneurial spirit and success in a highly specialized industry have provided me with a blueprint for navigating complex business landscapes.

Growing up in an entrepreneurial household, I was taught to view problems as opportunities for growth and innovation. Both of my parents have mentored and advised me, offering invaluable insights and unwavering support. Their belief in my potential and their encouragement have been instrumental in giving me the confidence to pursue my business goals with determination and optimism.

Q6: What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs and future startup founders based on your own experiences and lessons learned?

Based on my experiences, I would advise aspiring entrepreneurs to focus on building strong relationships and networks, as collaboration often leads to unexpected opportunities. Always stay open to learning and be proactive in seeking feedback, as it’s crucial for growth. When seeking help, always offer help in return and genuinely support the entrepreneurial community around you. Prioritize understanding your target market deeply and remain committed to your mission, as this will guide you through challenges.
