What is your name, title, and role at your company?

Roxy Garrity, Founder, The Raleigh-Durham Girl

What does your company do?

The Raleigh-Durham Girl is a hyperlocal media website and lifestyle brand dedicated to Raleigh and Durham created for locals by locals.

What inspired you to start this company?

I’ve been a journalist for most of my professional career and I also have an entrepreneurial spirit. When we moved to Raleigh from NYC one thing I noticed that was missing was a media outlet geared to millennial women. Having recently worked at a digital media startup up I felt like the timing was right to launch The Raleigh-Durham Girl.

Is there an inspiration behind the name of your company?

Not really, I just want people who are looking to relocate to the area and are searching “Raleigh-Durham” to be able to find us quickly.

What’s your favorite part of being an entrepreneur?

The creative freedom, having a career that aligns with my values, and getting to choose the clients that I work with.

Do you have any mentors or role models who have inspired you while you have been building your business?

The female leaders at my former startup, LittleThings. One of the most famous female entrepreneurs in my industry, Arianna Huffington. The founder of 5-Hour ENERGY and philanthropist Manoj Bhargava.

Any advice for entrepreneurs?

Don’t be afraid of asking for what you need for your business to succeed. The worst that can happen is you get a “no” and then you’re back to where you started. However, you’d be surprised at the things you can accomplish and get when you ask for them. No matter what, it’s always a learning experience.
