We hope you stayed dry and safe during Tropical Storm Debby last week. The storm wasn’t just a weather event—it was a powerful reminder of the mounting pressures on our power grids and the pressing need for resilient renewable energy infrastructure. But here’s the real question: How are we stepping up our game in renewable energy, and what’s the role of semiconductor tech in this leap forward?

We all know the Triangle is renowned for its commitment to supporting emerging technologies, but one “emerging” technology that has long been championed in the region is CleanTech. This field is all about cutting-edge technologies and breakthroughs designed to enhance energy resiliency and reduce environmental impacts.

Since 2012, the Research Triangle Cleantech Cluster (RTCC) has played a pivotal role in uniting industry leaders and fostering collaborative efforts to drive CleanTech progress. North Carolina State University (NC State) is home to three powerhouse research centers shaping our future energy grid and power supply: the FREEDM Center, Power America, and CLAWS. FREEDM is crafting the next-generation energy grid, Power America is pushing the envelope on power electronics, and CLAWS is creating advanced semiconductors for the renewable energy economy.

Semiconductors are vital to a CleanTech future. With their unique electrical properties, they are key to modern electronics and essential for advancing renewable energy. They enhance the efficiency of energy conversion from sources like solar panels and wind turbines, enable smart grid systems, and improve energy storage solutions. They also power the advanced sensors and control systems driving innovation in solar and wind technologies.

The Triangle isn’t just talking the talk—it’s walking the walk, with major semiconductor companies like Wolfspeed making significant strides.

So, what’s next? The next 20 years are poised to redefine our energy future and tech landscape. The region has the CleanTech “infrastructure” to support this industry, with substantial strides made by academic institutions, industry leaders, and innovative startups. But what does the future hold?

Join us on August 28 for “Leading the Way in the New Energy Economy.” This gathering will not only celebrate the leadership and achievements of the past two decades but also explore the exciting opportunities that lie ahead for the next 20 years.

This isn’t just an event—it’s an invitation to experience firsthand why Raleigh is an exciting place for anyone interested in the future of energy technology. Whether you’re a tech enthusiast, a business leader, or simply curious about the next big thing in clean tech, this event will provide valuable insights and a glimpse into the region’s thriving innovation landscape.
