In this Startup Spotlight, we’re thrilled to feature Dr. Victoria Fritz, Founder & CEO of Baby Bumps. As an MD with Type 1 Diabetes, Dr. Fritz understands the unique challenges of pregnancy for those with T1D. Faced with the choice of either spending a fortune on a surrogacy agency or navigating the process through Facebook, she decided neither option was ideal. So, she created Baby Bumps to provide a better solution. Her innovative surrogacy matchmaking platform is designed to offer parents and surrogates peace of mind, independence, and swift connections. Join us this week in learning more about Dr. Fritz’s impactful venture and the story behind getting it started.
Q1: Could you tell us a little bit about your company?
BabyBumps is a unique surrogacy matchmaking platform designed to help parents and surrogates find peace of mind, independence, and quick connections.
Q2: What inspired you to start your own company?
As an MD with Type 1 Diabetes, I’m aware of the risks associated with pregnancy for those with T1D. I’ll be using a surrogate myself, which inspired me to create a platform that addresses these challenges.
Q3: What previous experiences influence your role today?
With a background in cardiothoracic surgery and as an intended mother, my journey has deeply influenced how I approach and understand the surrogacy process.
Q4: What are the biggest challenges you’ve encountered as a startup founder this far, and how did you overcome them?
One of my biggest challenges has been figuring out the next steps. Luckily, RIoT’s accelerator program has been a game-changer, helping me navigate these obstacles and providing invaluable support.
Q5: Do you have any mentors or role models who have inspired you while you have been building your business?
Absolutely! I’ve been inspired by Mireya McKee and Judy Prasad from KickStart Venture Services, Jimmy Melton, Barbara Bell from the UNC Eschelman Institute for Innovation, the fantastic RIoT Team, Lauryn Colatuno (btw a former RIoT employee!), Emil Runge from First Flight Venture Services, and other fellow founders who have generously shared their support and advice.
Q6: What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs and future startup founders based on your own experiences and lessons learned?
Get out there and network as much as you can in person. You never know where a conversation might lead, and the RTP area is full of people and resources eager to support founders and see them succeed.
